How much does insulation and membrane cost?

I’m Andy Parkin, Managing Director of the Multi Award Winning Speed Screed.

What factors effect how much does insualtion and membrane cost?

We are here to talk about price.  This time we are here to talk about insulation, membranes and the cost of those particular systems.

First of all, if we are looking at typical insulation boards, they can be 50, 75, 100 mm thick typically.

If we work on the basis of 100 mm thick, for a P.I.R board (high-density foil faced board).  You are going to be looking in the region of £10 to £15 per square meter (supplied and laid).

There are a number of factors to take into consideration:

  • Capacity of the team, how much can the team lay in a day.  If you work at full capacity, it is going to more cost effective.
  • Shape of the building.  If it is nice open spaces, the insulation will go down a lot quicker.  That will have a bearing on the cost.
  • The actual performance
  • The density
  • The strength and the thermal performance of the boards are all going to be a factor in there that will adjust the price.

£10 to £15 per square meter gives you the basic and hopefully helps.

The other thing that we will often have questions about is acoustic insulation.

If you are building multi occupancy flats or perhaps you have got areas that acoustics are very important and you don’t want the transference of noise around the building.  This could be your house, then acoustics are something that you will be looking at.

Depending on the type of product that you use it, with the basic starting at around £5 per square meter and then going up to more high-density rubber which can make it around £15 per square meter. All the other factors that we mentioned play a part in this.

Membranes

One other thing that you may require on site is a separating membrane, a slip membrane.    You would be looking at between £1 and £2 per square meter.  It would again depend on the area that we are completing in the day so that are we at maximum capacity.

Is the area open?  Can the membranes be laid quite effectively and quickly?

The other membranes that we supply are damp proof membranes.   You are looking at between £1.50 – £2.50 for a typical 1200 gauge.

There are other systems that may be more expensive but that’s just a typical product.  There will be various various factors that are going to change your price but that gives you a ballpark figure.
